Waterford Boys Top EL, Qualify For State Tourney
Waterford — Kevin Rathbun's two goals and one assist Tuesday helped the Waterford High School boys' soccer team qualify for the state tournament with a 3-1 win over East Lyme in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Large Division.
Rathbun's first goal brought the Lanc-ers (7-5-2, 4-3-2) back from a 1-0 deficit in the 19th minute. He gave Waterford a 2-1 lead in the 38th minute and assisted on Nate Molina's goal in the second half.
Phil Ziegler scored for East Lyme (2-12, 0-9).
In other games:
• Lyman Memorial clinched the ECC Small Division title with a 5-0 victory over Putnam. Josh Bessette scored three goals for the Bulldogs (11-1-2, 9-0-2), while Tim Rea and Cole Thornton also scored. Devon Allegro had an assist. Brian Peters made 20 saves for Putnam (1-12, 0-10).
• T.J. Hepburn set up Kyle Muir for the game-winning goal late in the first half as Ledyard beat Woodstock, 1-0, in the ECC Large Division. Goalie Tyler Edwardsen made 11 saves for the Colonels (8-4-2, 4-3-2). The Centaurs are 8-3-1, 5-2-1.
• Casey Jones scored twice and Tourtellotte defeated St. Bernard, 2-0, in the ECC Small Division. Zach Putnam assisted on Jones' second goal for the Tigers (7-5-2, 6-2-2) and Julian Valentine made eight saves. St. Bernard is 4-7-3, 3-4-3.
• Justin Levasseur scored two goals to help hand coach Charlie Hinckley his 100th career win in Bacon's 2-1 victory over Killingly in the ECC Medium Division. The Bobcats are 8-4-1, 5-2-1. Alex Philayvanh scored for the Redmen (0-10-4, 0-6-3).
• Andrew Millerd and Mark Marchitto scored goals in Windham's 2-1 win over Montville in the ECC Medium Division. The Whippets are 5-9, 3-5). Matt Furman scored for the Indians (4-8-1, 2-5-1).
• Kyle St. Jean snapped a 1-1 tie and Plainfield defeated New London, 3-1, in the ECC Small Division. Josh Bourque and Justin Millette also scored for Panthers (9-4-1, 7-3-1). Jacques Fleuryeure scored for New London (2-10-1, 2-7-1).
Girls'
• Stephanie Bernardi's goal in the 72nd minute snapped a 1-1 tie and Woodstock Academy defeated Ledyard, 4-1, in the ECC Large Division. Heather Slesinski and Jodi Theriault scored in the final seven minutes for the Centaurs (9-2-2, 6-2-1). Laura Baumann scored in the 50th minute for Ledyard (3-12, 0-9).
