Loss Dashes Conn College Field Hockey's Postseason Hopes

New London — This is what kind of year it's been for the Connecticut College field hockey team: The Camels appeared to score a meaningless goal in the final second of regulation Tuesday but officials ruled it came too late.

Needing a win against Amherst to keep their slim hopes for a bid to the New England Small College Athletic Conference Tournament, the Camels did everything but score, walking off Silfen Field with a frustrating 2-0 defeat in their home regular-season finale.

“We really needed it,” senior Sage Shanley said.

After posting their first winning record in nine years last season, going 8-7, the Camels hoped to build on that momentum and qualify for the NESCAC Tournament for the second year in a row.

Instead, the Camels stumbled to a 2-6 conference record, 6-7 overall with one game to go.

“It's heartbreaking ...” coach Debbie Lavigne said of her team failing to make the conference tournament. “I'm shocked, totally shocked. The NESCAC this season is the tightest it has ever been since I've been here. This is a perfect example.”

Trailing 1-0 heading into the second half, the Camels dominated play, setting up for 11 penalty corners. Shots either went wide or were blocked by the defensive wall in front of goalie Jane Mostue, who made six saves. Conn had an 11-7 edge in shots overall.

An offensive funk helped derail Conn's postseason chances. The Camels have scored five goals in the last five games, three coming in a win over Colby on Saturday.

“We haven't been able to score,” Lavigne said. “If you can't score, it's hard to win. It's the third game we've completely dominated.”

Freshman Molly Malloy's second goal of the game at the 56-minute mark sealed the win for Amherst (7-6, 3-5). It was one of the few chances for the Lord Jeffs in the second half. Conn goalie Jamie Sheahan made four saves.

The Camels will attempt to close the season on a positive note Saturday, visiting Tufts.

Prior to Tuesday's game, seniors Katie Williams, Liz Lingo and Shanley, a Williams School graduate from Westerly, were honored. All three played pivotal roles in improving the program.

“It's been a great run,” Shanley said. “It's bittersweet. We had everything in place to make the tournament. ... It's kind of a letdown in that way.”
