Patterson's Goal Lifts Mitchell

Chestnut Hill, Mass. — Sophomore Kevin Patterson scored the game-winning goal late in the first half Tuesday to lift the Mitchell College men's soccer team past Newbury College, 2-1.

The victory kept the Pequots, 8-6-3 overall, undefeated in the Association of Division III Independents Northeast Conference at 4-0. They also qualified for the postseason tournament for the third year in a row.

“It was a very good win on the road,” Mitchell coach Dean Roberts said. “(Newbury) won the championship last year.”

Senior Chris Mackinnel opened the scoring for Mitchell at the 6:13 mark, heading home a goal off an assist from Cole Griffin. Newbury's Jose Neves tied the game at 1 before Patterson answered. Niko Papathanasious, a New London High School graduate, helped set up the goal with a corner kick. Freshman goalie Ryan West made eight saves for the Pequots.

Mitchell finishes the regular season this week and then prepares to host the conference tournament the weekend of Nov. 4-5.

In other games:

• Senior Casey Steuer scored two goals while classmate Rob Poitinger scored a goal and added two assists as Coast Guard extended its unbeaten streak to five straight with a 5-0 win over New York Maritime. Steuer opened the scoring 27:33 into the match and sophomore Peter Deneen extended the Bears' lead to 2-0 with 5:15 left in the first half. Sophomore Nate Wojcik assisted on both first-half goals for the Bears (9-3-3).

Women's soccer

• Connecticut College snapped a six-game winless streak with a 4-1 nonconference win over Johnson & Wales. Jackie Wade scored her team-best fifth goal of the season while Analisse Rios, Rachael Schefrin and Sharon Katz also scored for the Camels (3-9-1). Sarah Beaudoin, a Norwich Free Academy graduate, and Bailey Andrews combined for nine saves. Johnson&Wales is 8-7-1.

Field hockey

• Norwich Free Academy defeated Old Saybrook 2-0 and qualified for the state tournament for the first time in program history. “It's good for the program and good for the kids,” NFA coach Souki Syharat said. “I think it's experience ... I have a group of seniors, nine seniors who went through a tough time. There's been a lot of learning curve.”

Jessica Anilowski and Jaime Burkewitz scored NFA's goals in a three-minute span in the second half and Nikki Boushee and Melody Pothier combined for five saves in the shutout. Bianca DeCastro had an assist. NFA is 6-7-2 overall. Old Saybrook is 1-12.

• Erika Malito scored in the 42nd minute and Killingly maintained its state tournament hopes with a 1-0 win over Windham in the Eastern Connecticut Conference. Chelsea Hill assisted on the goal and Jamilee Potter made two saves for the Redgals (4-5-3, 4-4-1). Windham is 3-9-1, 1-8-1.

Swimming

• Dana Tricarico won the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events and swam a leg of East Lyme's winning 200 medley relay, as the Vikings defeated Norwich Free Academy 106-75.

Julie Tibbetts, Stef Felitto and Emily Newton joined Tricarico in winning the relay for the Vikings (13-1, 10-0 ECC), who clinched at least a share of their seventh straight league championship. East Lyme has a two-meet lead over second-place Fitch (8-2) with two meets to go. NFA (5-6, 5-5) won both the 200 freestyle relay and the 4x100 freestyle relay, with Lydia Bowers, Brianna Britos-Swain and Megan O'Connor contributing to both.

• Erika Bodin won the 500 freestyle, leading a Waterford sweep in a 71-46 victory in the ECC. Kim Peterson took first in the 200 individual medley for the Lancers (6-4, 6-4). Maria Moises was a double winner (50 freestyle, 100 backstroke) and Melanie Garay won the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke for the Whalers (0-11, 0-10).

• Emma Reim won the 500 freestyle and joined Anna Deneka, Hein Le and Kelly Ford on the winning 200 medley relay team in Ledyard's 86-68 win over Windham in the ECC.

The Colonels are 4-5, 4-5. Laurie Jenkins won the 50 freestyle for the Whippets (2-9, 2-9).

Cross country

• The Westerly girls were fourth at the freshman state meet at Goddard Park in East Greenwich, finishing with 99 points. Smithfield was first with 66 points.

Top runners for Westerly were Michon Dinwoodie, ninth in 16:13; Bridgette Murphy, 15th in 16:49; Alli Stefanski, 29th in 17:45; Ryann Murphy, 34th in 17:53; and Jane Mueller, 41st in 18:15. North Kingstown's Kathryn Lynch won the 2.4-mile event in 15:35.

Volleyball

• Aimee Matteson had 15 points and 15 assists as Grasso Tech defeated Wheeler, 26-24, 23-25, 25-20, 25-16. Emily Borden had 18 points and 10 kills for the Eagles (12-2). Wheeler is 5-12.
