CSAFC To Honor Cone At Annual Dinner At Sun

Old Saybrook — The Connecticut Sports Foundation Against Cancer (CSFAC) will honor former New York Yankees pitcher David Cone at its annual Celebrity Dinner and Memorabilia Auction on Feb. 9 at Mohegan Sun.

Cone, a five-time all-star, who pitched a perfect game and was part of four World Series championship teams, will be celebrated in an evening of toasting and roasting. Mike Francesa, of Mike and the Mad Dog, will host the program and air his WFAN radio show from the casino that day.

The Annual Celebrity Dinner and Memorabilia Auction, which is the largest fund-raiser of the year for CSFAC, begins at 5:30 p.m. with a cocktail reception and sports memorabilia silent auction. The reception will be followed by dinner with the nearly 20 celebrities in the Uncas Ballroom and the Cone tribute.

The CSFAC was founded in 1987 by former major league and Yankee catcher and first baseman John Ellis, a New London native, for the purpose of assisting cancer patients and their families and providing donations to area hospitals for cancer research. Ellis established the foundation because he and his family have been touched by cancer. He lost a brother and sister to cancer before either reached 40 years of age. In 1986, Ellis himself was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Disease (cancer of the lymph system).

Funds raised by the Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, go directly to an endowment. The dividends from the endowment are provided to Connecticut families affected by cancer and in need of financial assistance. To purchase dinner tickets or reserve a table, call the foundation's offices at (860) 388-0788.
