New York — The NCAA has declared UConn freshman Hasheem Thabeet eligible for the upcoming men’s basketball season.
The 7-foot-3, 265-pound center is expected to start for the Huskies. He has attracted the attention of NBA scouts.
Thabeet is from Tanzania and most recently attended Cypress Christian School in Houston.
Members of the UConn athletic department have been working with the NCAA to resolve Thabeet's academic eligibility. The roadblock is common for foreign players.
Thabeet has been practicing with the team.
The NCAA notified Bill Schults, Uconn’s compliance coordinator, Tuesday night. He told Coach Jim Calhoun, who notified Thabeet.
