HP counsel resigns ahead of House hearing
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Hewlett-Packard Co. on Thursday said its general counsel, Ann Baskins, had resigned, effective immediately, ahead of a U.S. House of Representatives hearing on the company's methods in investigating boardroom leaks.
Baskins had worked at HP for 24 years, beginning her career at the PC maker shortly after completing law school, HP Chief Executive Mark Hurd said.
"Stepping down was a very hard decision for her, but by doing so she has put the interests of HP above her own and that is to be commended," Hurd said in a statement.
Hurd and former Chairman Patricia Dunn are due to recount their roles in the company's probe to a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee hearing that begins at 10 a.m. EDT. (1400 GMT).
HP has admitted its investigators impersonated company board members, employees and journalists to obtain their telephone records in an effort to identify who may have leaked secret board discussions.
Baskins' resignation is the latest in a series of executive departures at HP over the probe. Dunn resigned from her post on HP's board on Friday while two others, global investigations chief Anthony Gentilucci and ethics officer Kevin Hunsaker, have since left the company.
